WGNQ Community Issues and Public Affairs Programs
Broadcasted to address these Issues

1st Quarter 2008

Informal discussion with our listeners and leaders in our community has raised the following issues:

 

1)     Programming: Listeners want Southern Gospel Music programming rather than all talk.

2)     Government:  IRS and taxes

3)     Economy:  The price of fuel is fueling a financial crisis that concerns our listeners.

4)     Minority programming is needed.

5)     Social/Relational: Marriages are in trouble.

 

The following programs address these issues:

 

1)     Programming: WGNQ began playing Southern Gospel Music March 31 and continues each weekday from 9-11 A.M.  This show is locally programmed and announced.

2)     Government: IRS Taxpayer Advocacy Panel. Guest: Mark Paris, Panel Member. The IRS held one of only three town meetings of this group in Homewood. This group develops a list of concerns about the IRS and takes them to Congress. The program explained how to contact the 50 member panel.  Aired 2-24-08 at 15:05 for 25 minutes.

3)     Economy: 

a.      Government Free Tax Service for Poor (Alabama Viewpoint).  Guest: Stephen Black, Impact Alabama.  The non-profit group is in seven cities across the state to help low-income people fill out tax returns free of charge. The group has been working for several years and it is expanding. Aired 2-3-08 at 15:05 (25 minutes).

b.     Government Tax Scams (Alabama Viewpoint). Guest: Dan Boone, IRS There are several scams that have been circulating in Alabama, specifically the Black Belt, targeting the poor and elderly. There are four main scams in Alabama right now, the internet is helping spread the scams and make them look legitimate. Aired 2-10-08 at 1505 (25 minutes).

4)     Minority Programming: 

a.      WGNQ continues to carry House Of Bread, a 27-minute locally produced minority program each Sunday from 3:33-4:00 p.m. with a repeat on Wednesdays from 2:03-2:30 p.m.

b.     Breath Of Life is another program meeting minority needs.  It aired each week in several slots including 2:33-3:00 p.m., usually on Thursday afternoons. 

c.      Joni and Friends airs each weekday at 8:47 (five minutes).  This is a program produced by and discussing the needs of physically-handicapped individuals (as well as encouraging non-physically-handicapped individuals.)

5)     Social/Relational: 

a.      New Life Live airs each weekday from 12:00 noon-12:55 and provides Christian counseling for marriages and other family issues.

b.     America’s Family Coaches airs each weekday at 18:05-18:30.  This program specifically targets family and other relational needs.

c.      Focus On the Family airs each weekday at 6:25 (25 minutes).  This is another program focusing on strengthening family relationships.

d.     Technology Internet Safety for Kids.  Guest: Donna Funderburke Parker, Director of Resources Safe Harbor.  An agreement has been reached between My Space and Alabama AG to take steps to reduce predators on Internet website. She was a former investigator hunting child sex predators. She says it is almost an unenforceable agreement. Aired 1-20-08 at 15:05 (25 minutes).

e.      Big Brothers & Big Sisters.  Guest: Gary Asher, Director Big Brothers & Big Sisters.  It was National Mentoring Month and Asher explained how the program works and how people are matched with kids.  Aired 1-27-08 at 15:05 (25 minutes).

4th Quarter 2007

WGNQ attempts to address issues of concern to our local community.  Among the issues determined to be of most concern to the community during the preceding calendar quarter were:

News / Area Funeral Arrangements
Listeners have requested we run Funeral Arrangement Information.  WGNQ now shares Area Funeral Arrangements each weekday morning at 7:45 and repeated again at 8:55.

WGNQ now presents Local Community Events for approximately 3 minutes each weekday morning at 7:40.

There have been 87 fire related deaths in Alabama in the past year. Alabama is number 3 in the nation. Then he explains what he thinks needs to happen to reduce that number.

He is one of the specialists that creates the weekly report on drought and says it could last into next summer.

The two guests explain the state and federal approaches to the highly controversial S-Chip bill. Caldwell says it is making her program hard to manage.

3rd Quarter, 2007 Public Issues File

  

WYMR provides its listeners with programming and public service announcements that address issues of concern to our local community. Included among the issues determined to be of most concern to the community during the preceding calendar quarter were:

These and other concerns were addressed in the following programs:

Crime-Sexual Abuse

Focus On the Family Weekend Broadcast for August 11 and 18, 2007 from 18:00-18:55 included an approximately 10-minute segment on female sexual abuse and how one woman is helping others to recover.  A major therapy she uses is to just show the abused appropriate love.

Government-Terrorism

Haven Today airing from 10:03-10:30 September 10-15 took an in-depth look at Muslims, terrorism, and how Christians should relate to the issue.

There was a burn ban in effect. The Forestry Commission has lifted a ban on fireworks after reaching a deal with fireworks companies.

Hessian says and has published an article almost saying that child protective services organizations department needs to be abolished.

Government-The DC Madam

Guest: Jean Palfrey

She is under indictment by the federal government and is threatening to release her

black book of clients. She explains what she has been charged with and reveals a few names of those who have been clients of her services.

Education-Literacy Efforts

She discusses literacy in Alabama and what is causing the problem. They are spearheading an effort to open a new effort in Alabama to match people with programs to learn to read.

His book is based on study of chemical regulations in Europe versus the U.S. He says

we could learn from the Europeans, especially in dealing with China, which is sparking huge recalls.

His agency is warning seniors there are scams out that are aimed specifically at seniors like lunch seminars. He outlines where they can get help in sorting the wheat from the chaff.

They’ve just released a poll that shows that 85% of parents are monitoring Internet use by kids in the home.

the Hezbollah.

Topic: AIDS Testing and Funding He says that they are asking everyone,

married or not, be tested for AIDS to stop the spread. He says that is

even more important than try to preserve the trust inside a marriage.

They are also pressing for more funding for AIDS testing and education.

Mitchell had split for a time from his organization (the ACLU) in their

defense of a group that has been protesting at military funerals around

the country. He explained during the interview he had a change of

heart and why. He also explains how reprehensible he felt the protest

are.

Topic: Non-Invasive Surgery Techniques

Parker describes newer surgical techniques that require less invasive

procedures. He also explains the benefits and apprehensive response

some have had to them.

Lincoln is the only Alabama city sponsoring a Freedom Walk of the 120

cities sponsoring them around the country to remember September 11th.

October begins the driest time of the year. The summer drought could

make the fire threat even more dangerous. Vansant explains what people

can do to prepare around the home.

This local missionary group has been trying to raise awareness of the

tragedy in
Sudan. Smith has been there. The president says the US

needs to do something about it. Her group is trying to get Alabamians

to work over there to try and stop human trafficking there..

July-September, 2005

1)  Meth-Amphetamine is becoming a significant problem in our area.

           

Satellite Sisters (broadcast Sundays from 2-5 P.M.) has addressed this by interviewing experts who explain the results to users and offer advice on breaking the habit (Duration: 60 minutes).  Sean Hannity also addressed the issue during his show on October 5, 2005 (Duration: 90 minutes).

2)  WYMR’s service area has a dearth of local news and information.

WYMR provides 90 Second Community Bulletin Boards throughout the broadcast days.  These programs give local news and upcoming event information, as well as reporting on community issues.  (Duration: 90 minutes, at least six presentations each high-power-time broadcast day.

October-December, 2005

1)  Internet Pornography.

On October 16, 2005 from 2:00-3:00 pm Satellite Sisters did an informative and balanced presentation on the dangers and problems associated with internet pornography.

2)  WYMR’s service area has a dearth of local news and information.

WYMR provides 60-Second Community Bulletin Boards throughout the broadcast days.  These programs give local news and upcoming event information, as well as reporting on community issues.  Duration: 60 seconds, at least six presentations each high-power-time broadcast day.

3) Healthful Living.

On October 16, 2005 from 4:38-4:58 pm Satellite Sisters presented information regarding Blood Pressure.  This health problem is significant in our area and especially so among Afro-Americans.

Each Sunday from 9:00-11:00 am WYMR presents Ken Cooper’s health program.  Cooper addresses all aspects of health with emphasis on preventive health, exercise, and health for our growing older population.
